About

Roagna Barbaresco "Crichet Pajé" 2016 is a dry red wine made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes, sourced from the prestigious Pajé vineyard in the Barbaresco region of Piedmont, Italy. This limited-production wine is a profound expression of its unique terroir, crafted by the Roagna family using traditional methods and extended aging. "Crichet Pajé" is regarded as one of Roagna’s most refined and age-worthy cuvées, embodying elegance, complexity, and structure.

Producer
Luca Roagna is the youngest generation of winemakers in this winery and works side by side with his cheerful father Alfredo. From 15 hectares of vineyards, both Barbaresco and Barolo are produced here. The history of the family begins in the commune of Barbaresco, where Luca's grandfather acquired the Pajé vineyard in the 1950s. To understand the wines of the Roanha dynasty, it is important to know that winemakers adhere to the principle of the development of the biological variety sélection massale (renewal of vineyards using cuttings of old vines), as well as the fact that grapes are harvested from ancient vineyards (some are more than 100 years old - for example, in the commune of Falleto ). The wine selection is dominated by three Cru Barbaresco: Pajé, Crichet Pajé and Pajé Riserva; the difference lies in the direction in which the vineyards are oriented and in the age of the vines. The Roanha family has never been afraid of innovations and since 1982 they have been offering a mixture of Nebbiolo grapes from different years: vino di tavola - a table wine called Opera Prima, and since 1988 - a mixture of white wines Solea, Chardonnay and Nebbiolo.
Tasting notes

Roagna Barbaresco “Crichet Pajé” 2016 opens with deep aromas of dried roses, cherry liqueur, forest floor, and hints of truffle and spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet graceful, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and layered flavors of red currants, licorice, and earthy undertones. The finish is long and persistent, showcasing the wine’s aging potential and intricate character.

Pairing

This wine pairs exceptionally well with truffle risotto, game meats, or braised beef, where its complexity complements rich and savory flavors. It also shines alongside aged cheeses, such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino, enhancing both texture and taste.

Nebbiolo wines tipically have rich, but elegant tannins, high acidity and unic scent – often characterized as "roses and tar". After a few years of vintage, most Nebbiolo wines begin fading from intensive ruby to a glorious brick orange color and developing flavors of mushroom, moss, leather and black pepper.
Barbaresco wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape. Compared with the great neighbour Barolo these local wines are softer and ripen faster. These wines are loved for their wonderful combination of tenderness, subtlety and strength, as well as the strong and velvety aftertaste and the aroma of violets.
