Roagna Barbaresco “Paje V.V.” 2019

Nebbiolo | Piedmont | Italy | Red Wine | Roagna | 2019 | 0,75 L | 14,5 %
About
Roagna Barbaresco “Pajé V.V.” 2019 is a dry red wine crafted from Nebbiolo grapes in the prestigious Barbaresco region of Piedmont, Italy. Made from the estate’s oldest vines in the famous Pajé cru—planted on calcareous marl and limestone soils—this expression reflects the depth and structure of its terroir and rewards long-term cellaring.
Producer
Luca Roagna is the youngest generation of winemakers in this winery and works side by side with his cheerful father Alfredo. From 15 hectares of vineyards, both Barbaresco and Barolo are produced here. The history of the family begins in the commune of Barbaresco, where Luca's grandfather acquired the Pajé vineyard in the 1950s. To understand the wines of the Roanha dynasty, it is important to know that winemakers adhere to the principle of the development of the biological variety sélection massale (renewal of vineyards using cuttings of old vines), as well as the fact that grapes are harvested from ancient vineyards (some are more than 100 years old - for example, in the commune of Falleto ). The wine selection is dominated by three Cru Barbaresco: Pajé, Crichet Pajé and Pajé Riserva; the difference lies in the direction in which the vineyards are oriented and in the age of the vines. The Roanha family has never been afraid of innovations and since 1982 they have been offering a mixture of Nebbiolo grapes from different years: vino di tavola - a table wine called Opera Prima, and since 1988 - a mixture of white wines Solea, Chardonnay and Nebbiolo.
Tasting notes

On the nose, it unfolds with vibrant aromas of cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, dried rose, orange zest, and licorice, underscored by a pronounced mineral and earthy streak. The palate is refined and intense—medium to full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins, a core of red fruit, layers of spice, leather, tobacco, and scorched earth, all grounded by brisk acidity and a striking mineral finish. Bright acidity keeps the wine lively and balanced despite its powerful structure; the finish is long, chalky in tannin, and layered with depth.

Pairing

This robust Barbaresco pairs splendidly with hearty roasted meats, wild game, aged cheeses, and richly sauced pastas, complementing its structured tannins and intense flavor profile. Its balance of freshness and gravitas also makes it a great match for traditional Piedmontese dishes and grilled lamb.

Nebbiolo wines tipically have rich, but elegant tannins, high acidity and unic scent – often characterized as "roses and tar". After a few years of vintage, most Nebbiolo wines begin fading from intensive ruby to a glorious brick orange color and developing flavors of mushroom, moss, leather and black pepper.
Barbaresco wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape. Compared with the great neighbour Barolo these local wines are softer and ripen faster. These wines are loved for their wonderful combination of tenderness, subtlety and strength, as well as the strong and velvety aftertaste and the aroma of violets.
