Avignonesi "Desiderio" Toscana IGT 2021 is an outstanding 100% Merlot, named after Desiderio, a legendary bull that once lived on the Avignonesi estate. The grapes are sourced from carefully selected vineyards around Montepulciano, where clay and sandy-clay soils, a warm climate, and significant diurnal temperature variation encourage full phenolic ripeness and remarkable aromatic complexity. Following meticulous fermentation, the wine is matured in French oak barrels for approximately 18 months, adding depth, texture, and seamlessly integrated oak character. The exceptional 2021 vintage combines concentration, freshness, and elegance, offering impressive ageing potential.

Winery named after the first owners - the Avignonesi family. Since its foundation, it has experienced an exciting journey. Virginia Saverisa acquired the Avignonesi distillery in 2009. Avignonesi has become a leader in biodynamic viticulture in Italy. Since its acquisition, and thanks to Virginia's respect for the ecosystem, its employees and end consumers, the winery has begun to produce and make organic wines that are truly authentic in their origins.

The nose reveals aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, and black plum, layered with violet, dark chocolate, vanilla, sweet spices, tobacco, and subtle Mediterranean herb nuances. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, and elegantly structured, with velvety tannins, vibrant acidity, and generous dark fruit flavours. The finish is long, silky, and persistent, with lingering notes of cocoa, spice, and minerality.

An excellent match for grilled beef steak, roast lamb, wild boar ragù, venison, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. Its richness, velvety tannins, and concentrated fruit make it an ideal partner for robust meat dishes and classic Tuscan cuisine.

Merlot can produce red wines from medium to full-bodied, with rich but smooth and rounded tannins. Young merlot wine is dominated by aromas of blackberry, raspberry, violet and wild plum, but with aging it can develop aromas of figs, chocolate, leather and truffle.
The hilly terrain and warm climate make Tuscany an ideal region for winemaking. It ranks third by the amount DOC and DOCG category wines after Piemonte and Veneto. Currently the most popular variety is the noble Sangiovese - it is extremely thermophilic and successfully reveals its best traits in warm climates. Wines have a lovely structure, velvety tannins and a fruity aroma, the color is rich ruby red, but the most distinguishable flavor notes are cherries, raspberries and spices.
