Aglianico is a dark-skinned grape variety native to southern Italy, renowned for producing full-bodied, robust wines with the potential for aging gracefully over many years. Known for its strong tannins, high acidity, and distinctive notes of dark fruits, spices, and earth, Aglianico is often compared to the Nebbiolo of Piedmont, earning it the nickname "Barolo of the South." This grape thrives in the volcanic soils of regions like Campania and Basilicata, where it expresses a deep, complex character and a remarkable depth of flavor, making it one of Italy's most prestigious and sought-after wines.
At first, the wines of this region were intended for the production of passports, but recently more and more wineries have started to produce quality wines in small quantities instead of table wines. Abruzzo has only one DOCG and three DOCs whose reputations are closely monitored. Trebbiano, Chardonnay, Malvasia, Muscar, Viognier and Pinot Gris are the dominant white grapes, while the reds Motepulciano, Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Sangiovese and Shiraz are also common.
