Producer
Dating back to the beginning of the 1980s, Le Macchiole is one of the historic wineries in Bolgheri, and over the years, it has become a reference point for quality Tuscan wine. Founders Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli were among the region’s pioneers, and they contributed in a significant way to Bolgheri’s growing fame thanks to their work in creating wines full of character and personality that have become a symbol of the region. Today, Cinzia runs the winery with the essential support of her sons Elia and Mattia, who have become an important presence at the winery, together with a close team of enthusiastic colleagues. They have become one big family that never ceases to innovate and surprise themselves and one another. Ever changing in order to remain faithful to its original vision, Le Macchiole is in continuous evolution thanks to a careful, contemporary reading of wine and terroir. The conviction to pursue organic farming and an increasingly sustainable approach; a style that has become more and more defined, favoring refinement and elegance; and authenticity and personality have all become the defining characteristics of an historic winery that is nonetheless always moving forward, and always aware of the times.

The palate is greeted with a well-balanced combination of fruitiness and tannins, resulting in a wine that is both structured and smooth, with a lingering finish that calls attention to its elegance and craftsmanship. This balance of fruit and finesse makes it a particularly engaging example of Bolgheri Rosso.

Pairing

In terms of food pairing, this wine pairs exceptionally well with Italian classics such as pasta with meat sauces, where its acidity and fruitiness can cut through the richness of the dish. A single-varietal Cabernet Franc wine has medium body and exhibit graphite, green bell pepper and red licorice notes, with darker wines showing more cigar and leather flavors.
Bolgheri is a relatively new but prestigious Italian resort on the Tuscan coast, located in the Maremma, south of Livorno, and named after a town in the north of the region. It is known mainly for its vibrant, full-bodied and undoubtedly valuable red wines, usually produced using French grape varieties from Bordeaux. The wine-growing area has gentle vineyards near the Tyrrhenian Sea. Back in the 1970s, the region had a low reputation for wine production. Here, in a rather swampy area, atypical white and rosé wines were produced. It used to be that this area, unlike the classic Tuscan vineyards, is better suited for other types of agriculture. But that all changed in 1978 when, in a blind tasting run by Decanter magazine, a wine called Sassicaia from Bolgheri surpassed the great wines of Bordeaux.
The hilly terrain and warm climate make Tuscany an ideal region for winemaking. It ranks third by the amount DOC and DOCG category wines after Piemonte and Veneto. Currently the most popular variety is the noble Sangiovese - it is extremely thermophilic and successfully reveals its best traits in warm climates. Wines have a lovely structure, velvety tannins and a fruity aroma, the color is rich ruby red, but the most distinguishable flavor notes are cherries, raspberries and spices.
