About
Markus Molitor Riesling "Bernkasteler Lay" Spätlese Trocken 2021 is a finely crafted dry white wine, produced from Riesling grapes sourced from the "Bernkasteler Lay" vineyard, a site renowned for its blue slate soils in the heart of the Mosel region, Germany. This Spätlese (late harvest) Trocken (dry) wine embodies Markus Molitor's dedication to showcasing the varietal purity and terroir specificity, achieving a wine of remarkable complexity and depth, while maintaining a dry profile despite the late harvest richness. The "Bernkasteler Lay" Spätlese Trocken stands as a testament to the elegance and balance that can be attained through meticulous vineyard selection and winemaking precision, making it a distinguished example of Mosel Riesling.
Producer
"80% slope - 94% Riesling - 100% passion." In 1984, at the age of 20, Markus Molitor took over the management of the winery from his father with a clear goal: to produce the Riesling of the Moselle region under the name Molitor in the tradition of eight generations, the quality of which made the region famous all over the world 100 years ago. “Learning from the past” - this uncompromising pursuit of quality, manual labor, screening and harvesting of grapes, precision in processes, unique experience and knowledge of nature, grapes and wine production allow each terroir and vintage to be fully revealed in the taste of wine. Markus Molitor wines perfectly demonstrate the potential of the Moselle terroir - combining structure and depth of taste with freshness and elegance. The winery is located in the center of the Wehlener Klosterberg estate and uses grapes from 15 vineyards in different locations. Each of the vineyards is unique, which makes it possible to call them "Molitor terroirs".
Tasting notes

On tasting, the 2021 vintage offers an expressive nose of ripe citrus fruits, green apple, and floral hints, underscored by a pronounced mineral streak reflective of its slate-driven terroir. The palate is met with a vibrant acidity and a full-bodied richness, revealing layers of lemon zest, stone fruit, and a touch of herbal notes, culminating in a long, dry, and mineral-laden finish. This wine’s sophisticated interplay of fruit concentration and crisp dryness showcases Molitor’s skill in achieving balance and intensity in his wines.

Pairing

Pairing the Markus Molitor Riesling “Bernkasteler Lay” Spätlese Trocken with rich seafood dishes, such as lobster bisque or scallops in a creamy sauce, can complement the wine’s robust character and minerality. Additionally, it pairs exquisitely with spicy Asian cuisines, where its acidity and depth can balance the heat and complexity of the flavors. These food pairings not only highlight the wine’s versatility but also its capability to elevate a diverse range of culinary experiences, making it a superb choice for discerning wine enthusiasts.

The Moselle River, as a winding ridge of the region of the same name, Moselle, which often changes its direction, flows northeast from the Rhine and meanders over an area of almost 250 km. The Moselle, together with two small tributaries - the Saar and the Ruver - forms one wine region, which is considered the oldest in Germany. It is the fifth largest region in Germany. Today, half of the vineyards are located on steep slopes and terraces with a slope of more than 30 degrees, and some even 70. On these steep slopes, almost all grapes have to be harvested by hand. Therefore, each vine must be individually tied to a wooden peg. The valley's location makes this region one of the warmest in Germany. The steep slate slopes above the rivers accumulate solar heat during the day and radiate it again at night. The roots of the vine penetrate deep into the earth in search of water and minerals. That is why the winemakers here create unique wines with a fruity character and great depth of taste and relatively low alcohol content - ideal for a refreshing enjoyment. The region is also renowned for its noble sweet wines, with record-breaking prices at auctions every year, as well as the many excellent dry and semi-dry wines that win national and international competitions.
