About
Werner Domdechant Riesling "Guts" Trocken 2020 is a meticulously crafted dry white wine, produced from Riesling grapes sourced from the esteemed vineyards of Rheinhessen, Germany. This "Guts" Trocken showcases the winery's commitment to reflecting the unique terroir of Rheinhessen through precise viticulture and winemaking techniques, emphasizing the natural acidity and mineral-rich profile of the Riesling grape. The 2020 vintage stands out for its clarity, structure, and the way it balances the characteristic Riesling brightness with a profound depth of flavor, making it an exemplary representation of the dry style Riesling from this renowned region.
Producer
Domdechant Werner, on the slopes of Hohenheim, produces a richer version of the region's characteristic Rieslings. The winery owners own plots in three different vineyards, each capable of producing grapes for Erstes Gewächs wines (Grosses Gewächs in other regions of Germany) - the equivalent of the Burgundian Grand Cru. The Kirchenstück site grows grapes for more elegant wines, while richer wines are made from grapes from the Hölle and Domdechaney vineyards. Acquired in 1780, the Hohenheim winery has been passed down from generation to generation of the Werner family. Today the winery is owned by Dr. Franz Werner Michel, and his daughter Katharina Maurits runs the family business, and together they represent the 7th and 8th generations of the Werner family. Katarina recently bought the 13th century Cathedral de Mainz. The acquisition expanded the winery and increased production to meet the growing demand. The aim of the winery is to continuously improve the quality of the wines produced.
Tasting notes

The wine unfolds with an aromatic bouquet of lemon zest, green apple, and a touch of stone fruit, underscored by a crisp minerality and a refreshing acidity that leads to a clean, persistent finish. On the palate, “Guts” Trocken 2020 reveals a harmonious blend of citrus and peach flavors, complemented by a subtle herbal nuance, showcasing the wine’s complexity and the elegant expression of its varietal character. Its well-structured body and vibrant freshness make this Riesling a delightful choice for those who appreciate the dry, expressive wines of Rheinhessen.

Pairing

Pairing the Werner Domdechant Riesling “Guts” Trocken with dishes such as roasted chicken, seafood pasta, or a spring vegetable quiche can accentuate the wine’s crisp acidity and fruity undertones, creating a complementary dining experience. It also pairs beautifully with sushi or sashimi, where the wine’s minerality and clean finish enhance the delicate flavors of the fish, making for a harmonious and refined pairing. These food pairings not only highlight the wine’s versatility but also its capacity to elevate a wide range of culinary styles, underscoring its appeal as a food-friendly wine.

The Rheingau is a very popular tourist region with old monasteries and castles that fit perfectly into the wine landscape. The Riesling trail passes through over 120 km of picturesque wine villages. Along the way, restaurants and wine bars invite you to stop for a drop of Rheingau wine, while cultural and historical attractions will inspire you along the way. This beautiful plot is planted with 3185 hectares of vines. This is the famous Riesling, which grows on 2500 hectares of vineyards, as well as the dark Pinot Noir. Interestingly, the climate here is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers, as the vineyards are protected from the cold winds by the wooded Taunus mountains and take advantage of the heat reflected from the surface of the Rhine.
