Alsace, located on the northeastern border of France, differs from other wine regions in the country with its pronounced Franco-German culture. Alsace is the only wine-growing region in France with the famous Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Pinot Gris, commonly used in mixtures with different varieties in other regions, is another of the region's noble varieties. Alsatian Grand Cru wines are only allowed to be made from these three varieties, but there is an exception for Muscat grapes, which can be grown under special conditions.
