“Climens” 1er Cru Classe Barsac 2002

Château Climens is the leading winery in the Bordeaux commune of Barsac and produces the finest dessert wines in the region. The history of the winery dates back to the 16th century. In 1971, Château Climens was acquired by Lucien Lurton, and since 1992 it has been owned by Berenice Lurton, who also runs the winery. Château Climens is located in the south of the Barsac appellation, next to the village of Lapinet. In the vineyards, which are at the highest point of Barsak (20 meters above sea level), only Sémillon is grown. Grapes grow on soil with a top layer of gravel and sand, and the main layer contains limestone and clay. Château Climens' production volumes are strictly limited: after fermentation, the wine is aged for 22 months in oak barrels (1/3 new). Just as Château d'Yquem is the epitome of strength and power in the wine world, so Château Climens can be called a symbol of nuance, sophistication and complexity. The wines of the best harvests are aged up to 50 years. Château Climens products belong to the Sauternes Premier Cru class.

Sauvignon Blanc is a white-wine grape and that wines are known for crispy structure, vivid acidity and very aromatic profile. Classic bouquet of Sauvignon Blanc include green apple, gooseberry, white currant and herbla nuances like black currant leaf.

Barsac is the neighbour of the Sauternes region dessert wines. Only individually picked grapes with a high natural residual sugar level, which they obtain due to Botrytis cinerea or the so called "noble rot", are used in wine production. Wines are very aromatic with notes of honey and toasted bread. Semilion is the grape most used but Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle are also used in blends.

Bordeaux wines are considered to be the most prestige and renowned in the world. There are several classifications in Bordeaux but the main one, introduced in 1855, hasn’t changed since and still impacts wine prices nowadays. A few years later, in 1936, an alternative classification system - Crus Bourgeois - was established. Bordeaux is known for a commerce praxis called en primeur - it means that a buyer can purchase wines immediately after harvest and prior to production for a substantially lower price, thus obtaining the opportunity to sell them for a larger profit later in the future. Bordeaux wines can be described as big, complex and with a strong character, but very friendly at the same time so that each and every wine lover could find something tasty and suitable for a great wine night.
