“The aroma is saturated with notes of violets, raspberries and dark plums. The taste of the wine is silky, fresh and concentrated. The tannins are mild, active. The aftertaste is very long,” – Ronald Peterson, Noble Wine Sommelier

Clos des Papes

All products from this vendor
Paul Avril (1873-1962) was one of the creators of this appellation. In 1896 he began selling his wines under the name Clos des Papes. Grandson Paul Avril (1937-2009) started working at the winery in 1963 with his father and later his son. Paul Vincent Avril (1965-) attended a wine school in Burgundy as a young man and returned to the winery in 1988 with ideas about artistry and elegance, and to this day he considers these qualities to be the most important for high-quality wine. Today the estate occupies 32 hectares, and white grapes are grown on 3 hectares. The territory is divided into 24 sections around the city. One of the plots is located next to the Pope's castle and is fenced in by walls. It was this site that gave the name to the winery. In 2011, the vineyards received the category "agriculture biologique". Only one cuvée of white (10% of the total production) and red “Chateauneuf du Pape” is produced. Since 1991, a complete separation of the ridges has been carried out, and since 1987 all wine produced is bottled in the winery itself. The goal of the winery is to constantly produce high quality wine that meets the requirements of Paul Vincent Avril himself and his customers around the world.

Counoise

All products from this varietal
Counoise is often used in blends because the variety lacks deep color, tannins and potential alcohol level. It is often described as a peppery and spicy grape variety, but it also bring aromas of plum and wild raspberry.

Chateauneuf du Pape

France All products from this village
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is considered to be the star of Southern Rhône. The appellation is located on a hill in the centre of the southern region. The soil here is covered with big pebbles that heat up during the day and gradually give back the warmth to the vines at night. A total of 15 grape varieties are allowed for wine production - the main grape is Granache followed by Mourvedre and Syrah. The wines are characterized by saturation - they have a rich bouquet of toast, forest and candid berry notes. Young wines are purple red, but they become brick red with time. The most distinguishing sign for Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines is the Pope's emblem embossed in the thick glass bottles.

Rhone

France All products from this region
Côtes du Rhône vineyards are located on the banks of the Rhône River. The soil and the geographical conditions are very heterogeneous in the northern and southern parts of the region therefore the valley is divided in two parts - Northern Rhône and Southern Rhône. Vines in Northern Rhône are mainly grown on so-called "terraces" - steep granite and slate slopes. Winemakers are often not very fond of the harsh mistral wind because of its low temperature. The unusual climate causes the vines to produce small yields, but at the same time provides an intense flavour that has given the wines of Northern Rhône worldwide fame. Syrah is the mainly used grape for red wines - it produces deep wines with hints of pepper that are suitable for long ageing. Viognier is the queen of white wines, but Marsanne and Rousanne are also always close by. Some appellations allow white grapes to be added to red wines in order to smoothen the roughness of Syrah and enrich the wines with floral aromas. The landscapes of Southern Rhône are very different from the northern part - the vineyards are located along the river on low hills and plains and the weather is much friendlier. The grapes ripen in the hot summer sun and obtain a high sugar level resulting in rich and mouth-filling wines. The main grape used is Grenache, but 12 other varieties are allowed in the region - interestingly some wines even combine all of them.
